most excellent lists!

although, i learned it (never in school, but as an adult) as "my very educated mother just showed us nine planets."

But yours actually makes sense.

I just remember them as Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto, Xena.

What?! You don't remember Ruff Reed teaching us the immortal mnemonic "emm vem jay sun...period?" The California taxpayers sure wasted a bundle on YOUR education, I must say.

Why is it that the mnemonic devices always seem harder to remember than just remembering the thing itself?

Good point. In Anatomy last semester, we made extensive use of mnemonics. For the very reason you state, I think, most of them were mildly dirty. I've still forgotten them.
